A Changing Places toilet is a larger, fully accessible restroom with specialized equipment like a height-adjustable adult changing bench, a hoist, and a peninsular toilet, designed for severely disabled people and their carers who need more space and features than a standard accessible toilet provides, ensuring dignity and comfort for complex needs.
They allow people with conditions like muscular dystrophy or profound disabilities to participate in public life, as they offer space for two carers and crucial equipment that prevents awkward floor changes.
Ideally in as many public spaces as possible, creating accessibility for everyone. From 1st January 2021, Approved Document M (part of the Building Regulations 2010) was amended to require Changing Places toilets in certain new public buildings and major refurbishments.
These amendments make it statutory that new large public buildings over defined sizes or types e.g. places of assembly, recreation and entertainment with a capacity for 350 or more people will be required to install at least one Changing Places toilet if they are newly built or have a major refurbishment.
This can include art galleries, cinemas, concert halls, conference centres, further education colleges, universities, hotels that include leisure facilities, libraries, motorway services, museums, places of worship, and theatres.
Shopping centres or retail parks with gross floor areas of 30,000m2 or more, retail premises of 2,500m2 or more, sport or leisure buildings over 5,000m2, and stadia, theme parks, zoos, or exhibition centres with a capacity above 2,000 people will also be included.
Approximately 250,000 people (and their carers and families) with profound and multiple learning disabilities will benefit, as well as people with other complex or physical disabilities such as spinal injuries, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis as well as those with hidden disabilities and even some independent users also. A Changing Places toilet should meet the requirement of BS8300 as shown in this layout. A floor space of 12m² / 3m x 4m, with all equipment installed to meet critical dimensions and not to impact or hinder the useability or function of the equipment.
All Changing Places Toilets should have a Peninsular toilet with 1m clearance either side of the pan, drop down grab rails as well as fixed vertical grab rails, a colostomy shelf, a 1800 x 800 (min) height adjustable change bench, paper roll dispenser, a large bowl height adjustable wash basin with a lever mixer tap and a soap dispenser, an automatic hand dryer preferably low noise, a paper towel dispenser, a ceiling track hoist, privacy screen, bins, emergency call system to signal an alarm if needed, mirror, optional showering facilities, non-slip flooring, even lighting, easily accessible, well sign posted and clear instructions inside the room, visual contrasts between walls and equipment, HVAC and extraction.
