Overview:

RDV Adaptations were contacted by a family who were looking to extend their home so that they didn’t have to sell their property and move to a larger house. They wanted a space for all the family to be able to relax and interact with each other but also be functional as a place where they could cook and dine together as well as invite people over to host. It was important that the extension was bright and interacted with the back garden and outside space so that in summer the children could move in and out of the house as they pleased and it made the whole area a great place to have barbecues and parties.

We worked with the family to build a brick extension to the rear of the property, which had large bi-fold doors opening directly into the garden. The roof was a flat GRP construction which we added a pitched roof lantern to let in as much natural light as possible.

Internally, we created a new open plan kitchen complete with island and integrated appliances, giving the room a sleek and modern feel.

In the main space opposite the kitchen, we built a media wall for the family to spend time together with a movie night, or a haven for someone to escape having to watch sports or reality TV. Leading on from this space is the new dining area which is perfect for hosting parties or just getting all the family together for dinner and talking about their day.

All walls and ceilings were plastered and painted; floors were tiled which we carried through to the exterior to create the seamless transition between the internal and external space. We also created tiled upstand skirting instead of using traditional timber skirting for a high-end finish. All electrical outlets were colour matched to the palette and recessed downlights added to provide zonal lighting to allowing more control over the illumination of the room.

Key Challenges:

As this was a relatively straight forward project, there weren’t too many issues encountered. A thorough survey of the building prior to starting the work meant that we managed to prepare for most eventualities. One challenge with an extension this size and because the family wanted to create an open plan space, the only way to achieve this was to remove a large section of the rear external wall. This is a load bearing wall and if not correctly supported during the alterations, could cause the house to sag or collapse.

Solutions Delivered:

Our team being more than capable of dealing with this kind of problem, and with careful planning and calculation, we were able to support the building while the correct sized steels were installed to take the weight of the building.

Results & Benefits:

The result is a space that allows the family to interact together as well as provide functionality. It makes the property brighter by allowing more light in and it’s not only added overall value to the house, but it’s saved the family from having to relocate. Relocating would have possibly meant new schools for the kids, the stress of making the new property their own by redecorating and adapting it, not to mention the dread of packing your lives into boxes to then have to unbox it all. By utilising the space at the rear of their home, they turned an area that they won’t miss into a space that they now couldn’t live without.
